The will to persevere in sports is to have the mentality to not give up during hard times. This might mean a time in life of not making a team or having a coach who doesn’t seem to like you. Perseverance is needed at every stage in life. The more difficulties you go through, the more chance you have to build mental endurance and maturity. Everyone goes through similar challenges, but at different stages. The knowledge you have matters, because it helps you stay stable and control emotions better.
Great quote on perseverance
Consider it a great joy, whenever you experience various trails, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.
This quote above means that when hard times are in your path to consider it a joy… That is awesome because when things get hard, you’ll have the mindset to be lifted up instead of down.
Stay strong – you got this!
Persevere in sports like Michael Jordan
One of the greatest stories by any athlete is the one when Michael Jordan was cut from the high school basketball team his Sophomore year.
After getting cut, he went home and told his mom… She said “O Michael – it’s okay – the kid who made it over you is 6’8” …
Michael told his mom “Mom in this family, we won’t make excuses.” Then went out by himself to practice in the driveway till 1 am.
Most people would have not gone out to practice on their own after getting cut… This drove him to become great.
Do you have this same mindset to persevere in sports? Make the choice.
Great article by Don Yaeger ‘What makes the great ones great’
The best players have the maturity to train on their own.
Coming off an injury
What about the people who have a setback from injury… Maybe a torn ACL, bad concussion or anything that keeps you from playing for 6 – 9 months…
To persevere in sports you have to have that desire to push through the pain, disappointment, doubt and loneliness.
Look forward to the future and tell yourself that you will be better and stronger than before.
Don’t only tell yourself you got this, but believe it.
Persevere in sports during off-season
For youth and pro athletes the best way to keep improving is to work on your craft during the off-season.
Staying fit by riding the bike, running on your own, doing core workouts makes a big difference.
If you let yourself get out of shape, it will take months to get game fit again. Even if you do work out during the off-season, you’ll lose a little. It’s okay to lose a little game fitness, but there’s a big difference in being able to get fit in 2 weeks compared to 2 months.
Youth players regular season will be half over before they are at top form again – if they don’t practice on their own out of season.
Besides the physical improvement, training on your own, year-round gives you mental strength. Just know that you do need to take days off too.
No excuses if you want to persevere in sports
There are thousands of adults and adolescents who use excuses and never let go… I can’t tell you how many adults say they could have played pro, but they go injured. I want to tell them, well so have half of all the pro athletes…
Very few injuries keep you from ever playing again.
If you truly want to play at the highest level you can then go for it. Know that it won’t be easy.
Blood, sweat and tears are part of the journey – but so are smiles, high fives and wins.
